Use of smart alternators (Euro 5 and 6) in secondary batteries
Regenerative braking systems cause problems when secondary batteries are charging, particularly in commercial vehicles. The starter battery must have discharged by about 20% already to be able to store the energy during braking. For a while, the alternator will only provide 12.4V, which will prevent both the starter battery and secondary battery from charging.
The solution to this problem is a battery-to-battery charger. A detailed description of this problem and the offered solution is provided in the document “Regenerative braking – introduction to the problem and the solution”.
The battery-to-battery charger is available in 12V or 24V or a 12/24V combination and in charging currents of 25A to 120A.
